These fun heart brownies can be made from scratch or using your favorite boxed mix. I find that fudgy brownies cut a little better than the more cake-like variety. When we use our little heart-shaped cookie cutter to make the shapes of our heart brownies we want one that will hold up well to being a unique shape and not crumble away.
We are icing our heart brownies with chocolate fudge icing to help our confetti sprinkles stick better. This can get a little rich so it is a good idea to use a smaller-sized heart-shaped cutter. The one I used can make about 8-10 hearts out of a 9 x 12 pan of brownies.
How to Make Valentine’s Day Heart Brownies
I have been going through a terrible Fibromyalgia flare so I decided to use a box of brownie mix that I already had on hand for these. If you are making your brownies from scratch you want to prepare them following your recipe’s directions.
Bake brownies as directed on the box (or recipe) by following directions for a 9 x 12 pan. Place a layer of parchment paper in the pan before adding your brownie batter. This will make the brownies easier to remove from the pan and give you an even rectangle of brownie to cut your heart shapes out of.
Let your brownies cool for about 10 to 15 minutes before removing them from the pan. You want to pick up the entire big rectangle (aka mega-brownie) you have created in your pan by lifting the parchment paper. It should easily come out of the pan.
Once you have the mega-brownie out of the pan let it cool for an additional 15 to 20 minutes. You don’t want your brownies to crumble and letting them cool completely will help you tremendously here. Brownies that are still warm are a little too squishy to hold up well enough to cut shapes out of. If you are short on time you can bake the brownies a day early and cut them to make heart brownies to decorate on the day you need them.
Cutting and Decorating Your Heart Brownies
In order to get the most hearts out of your mega-brownie, it is important to alternate the placement of your heart-shaped cutter. For example, you want to cut the first one with the cutter right side up. The next one you want to turn the cutter upside down and get it as close to the original heart as possible. This way you aren’t wasting any more of the brownie with the “extra bits” than you have to. That said, the “extra bits” are still pretty tasty and fun to eat while you are decorating your heart brownies.
If your brownies still feel a little warm after you have cut them let them sit another 10 to 15 minutes to cool completely. You can make your own chocolate fudge icing or use store-bought. We are only going to do a very thin layer here so you don’t need much at all. However, it is best to soften your icing before using it so that your brownies don’t crumble while you are decorating them. You can do this by stirring it just before frosting your brownies or by popping it in the microwave for a few seconds.
Pour your confetti sprinkles into a shallow bowl. This will help you when it comes to decorating your heart brownies. Once you have your sprinkles ready you can begin frosting the brownies. Apply a thin layer of the chocolate fudge icing on the top of each brownie one by one. After you have the icing on top of each brownie dip it into the confetti sprinkles. You may need to dip it a few times to get enough sprinkles on it. You can gently rock the brownie so that all of the edges are covered.
How to Store Heart-Shaped Brownies
If you are transporting the brownies you will want to give the icing a little while to set up before storing them. If you are eating them at home they are ready to go! They should store well in an air-tight container for up to about a week.
These heart brownies are a great option for an after-school snack on Valentine’s Day, a school party favor, or even just something fun to make on a weekend at home.
